Project Planeteer: Bridging Africa's Digital Divide

The Socinga Africa Foundation's flagship initiative, Project Planeteer, is deploying solar-powered connectivity hubs to bring internet access to underserved communities.

Approximately 60 per cent of Africa's population remains offline. In rural communities across the continent, the absence of internet connectivity is not merely an inconvenience — it is a barrier to education, healthcare information, economic participation, and civic engagement. Project Planeteer, the Socinga Africa Foundation's flagship initiative, exists to close this gap.

Detailed at socinga.africa/foundation — and supported by the off-grid connectivity programme at socinga.africa/foundation/off-grid-wifi — Project Planeteer deploys solar-powered Wi-Fi hubs in communities where conventional internet infrastructure is absent or economically unviable.

Each hub is engineered for Africa's unique conditions. Solar panels provide the power that grid electricity cannot. Hardened enclosures protect equipment from extreme temperatures, dust, and moisture. Low-power mesh networking equipment distributes connectivity across a radius of up to 500 metres, enabling dozens of simultaneous users to access the internet from the surrounding area.

The initiative's deployment in rural Manicaland, Zimbabwe, provided early validation of the model. Over 200 families gained access to free internet connectivity through a single hub installation. Within weeks, local teachers were using the hub to access online educational materials, community health workers were downloading clinical guidelines, and small business owners were discovering new markets through digital platforms.

Sustainability is central to Project Planeteer's design philosophy. Solar power eliminates ongoing energy costs. Equipment is sourced for durability and serviceability. And community ownership models ensure that local stakeholders have a direct interest in maintaining and protecting the infrastructure.

The Foundation's long-term vision is ambitious: a network of interconnected hubs spanning multiple countries, providing a foundation of digital connectivity upon which further development initiatives can be built. Digital literacy programmes, telemedicine services, and e-commerce platforms all become viable once basic connectivity is established.

Corporate partners are invited to sponsor hub deployments. Each sponsorship directly funds the procurement, installation, and commissioning of a new hub — a tangible, measurable contribution to bridging Africa's digital divide.

This represents exactly the kind of structural change our industry has been waiting for.

Great analysis. I look forward to seeing how this scales across the COMESA region.
